The first Paralympic gold medal of the Hungarian team is here!
Amarilla Veres won the Hungarian team’s first gold medal in wheelchair epee fencing at the Tokyo Paralympics on Thursday.
In the women’s Category A fight, Veres advanced smoothly from her group with four wins and one defeat, yet she still had to fight on for the final. She first beat American Shelby Jensen to a 15-5 lead and then Russia’s Alena Yevdokimova to 15-13 in a big fight.
She won the semi-final with a tactical fencing, defeating Chinese Ching Pient by 15-13, and another Chinese fencer, Jung Ching, in the final. Until today Hungary only had one gold Paralympic medal in wheelchair fencing by Pál Szekeres.
According to Telex, Amarilla Veres won the second medal of the Hungarian delegation in Tokyo. On Wednesday, Zsófia Konkoly finished second in the 400-meter freestyle swimming competition.
